Race Story and Results from Opening Night 2005 April 2, 2005 Myrtle Beach Speedway begins 46th Season By Bobi Summers, Track Announcer The historic Myrtle Beach Speedway reopened this Saturday, April 2nd, to an excited crown of fans & drivers. This continues a long tradition, dating back three generations in our 46th year of providing NASCAR sanctioned racing along the Grand Strand. The famous .538 mile facility has been the delight Of fans and frustration of the best drivers’ in it’s many races over the seasons. A full schedule of local racing is in store for 2005, with 22 regular Saturday night events (Super Trucks up to 19 visits), that ends on September 17th. The USAR Hooters ProCup series returns on June 25th and October 22nd, with The “Naturally Fresh 250 presented by Black’s Tire” events. The 2nd Annual “Carolina Labor Day 500” returns September 3-4, and the 13th Annual “Holiday Inn West on the Waterway-Myrtle Beach 400” is slated for November 17-18-19-and 20. NASCAR WEEKLY RACING SERIES presented by DODGE : Former National Champion and 2-time Myrtle Beach Speedway Champion Robert Powell once again proved why he is among the 2-winningest drivers to ever run the Myrtle Beach Speedway, capturing pole honors @ 94.50 MPH. It Was no easy task, as Jamey Lee stayed within striking range to take lead on lap 30, then used his Rear-view mirror to capture his 1st win of 2005. Powell, Rick Smith (who overcame a 1st lap flat tire To pass 10 cars), Greg Hardee, & Brent Brinson were top-5. (6th-10th)=Shannon Jordan, Gerald Lee, Josh Smathers, Justin Milliken & Dan Moore. Jamey leads points by 5.
Super Truck Series Top 5 1. Clay Thomas #16 2. Jimmy Herrington #6 3. Barry Andrews #1 4. Wade Skipper #2 5. Kevin Parsons #98
LATE MODEL SUPER TRUCK : Clay Thomas & Barry Andrews qualified fastest to start front row For the 50-lap main event, leading a field of 19 Super Trucks through a good race. Thomas led flag-to-Flag, but was challenged by Andrews much of the 1st segment, then 4-time Champion Jimmy Herrington the final segment. Clay captured an emotional win for Brewer Racing, who lost mentor Don Brewer in the fall due to illness. Herrington, Andrews, Wade Skipper & Michael Elliott were top-5. Kevin Parsons, Jim Reames, Jamie Griffin, Greg Todd & Marty Griggs finished 6th - 10th. Clay leads points by 5. Super Trucks will run this Saturday, April 9th, off a week, back on April 23rd.

KARTRAX CHARGER CHALLENGE : Ron Miller and Robbie Mew impressively won their 7-lap heat race segments, allowing front row starts for the pair. Miller, in a new ride crewed by old friends, was class of the field, using his rear-view mirror to watch shuffling for position behind him the entire 25-lap race length. Miller held on to claim his 1st driving victory in years. (He was on the crew of former champion Keith Ferrell and also assisted other drivers with their careers). John Brown passed 12 cars to finish Runner-up. Tony Powell, Neil Cox, and Kevin Barnhill were top-5. 6th-10=Mew, Carl Williamson, Willie Grainger, Chris Patton & Sam Scarpelli. Ron leads the points by 5.
Street Stock Top 5 1. Brian Hicks #95 2. Randall Roberts #13 3. Mark Hale #19 4. Thomas Poole #3 5. Kent Bellamy #55 STREET STOCK : Defending (2-time) Series Champion Randall Roberts won the heat race, then led 13 laps in the 20-lap main event, giving way to Brian Hicks on lap 14. Hicks battled Roberts for the lead, yet held on to win. Hick’s has the point lead by 5. (He also won last event here-50 lap race in November). Roberts, Mark Hale, Tommy Poole and Kent Bellamy finished top-5. Mini-Stock Top 5 1. Adam Fulford #71 2. Willy Fulford #70 3. Terry Evans #35 4. Dub Fulford #72 5. Ronnie Campbell #99
MINI STOCK : Ronnie Campbell & Mark Evans won respective heat races (5-laps each) to start on the front row for the 15 lap main event. Campbell led 3-laps, giving way to Adam Fulford on lap 4, who took advantage of the move, holding off the field during several last lap restarts to record the 1st win of the 2005 season. Brother Willie (Fulford), Terry Evans, Daddy Dub (Fulford) & Ronnie Campbell top 5. Mark Evans, Sam Ely, Chris Vause, Eric Knight, & Linberg Smith 6th-10th. Adam leads by 5-points.
